CYO Sportsmanship Night Feb. 19, 2012!
As you know the Mission of the Diocese of
Cleveland CYO reminds us to help young people be more Christ-like in the
way they live. To support this goal, CYO Athletics promotes
participation and sportsmanship in order to foster the total development
of participants and influence the formation of Christian values in each.
To help celebrate our mission, the Diocese of Cleveland CYO and
Cleveland State University are sponsoring a Sportsmanship Award program
for teams who participate in CYO during this winter season. This program
started 9 years ago with Cleveland State University.
This is how the program will work…..
Coaches, Officials, Commissioners, Parents and Site Directors from
across the Diocese of Cleveland have the opportunity to nominate other
teams in their league that have demonstrated superb sportsmanship for
this award. We ask that you please take a few minutes to nominate a
worthy team. The team you nominate should be an exemplary team which
goes above and beyond normal expectations to witness and model good
sportsmanship and values in the Diocese of Cleveland CYO.
Click this
nomination link to complete the form now. Nominations need to
be submitted by February 1, 2012.
Once the nominations are received, the CYO staff and commissioners will
review and select teams from each division of play within each region of
the Diocese to be recognized for their demonstration of Christian
Sportsmanship. Presentations will be at the February 19, 2012 Cleveland
State University vs. West Virginia Match. The selected teams will
receive notification on February 6, 2012 from the CYO Office. At the
event, the team will receive recognition and their certificates and
plaque. Download the wrestling appreciation day
event flyer now for more
information.
ALL CYO TEAMS are welcome to attend the college event to celebrate the
progress they made this season. Attached is a flier on the event. Make
contact with the individuals listed on the flier to get your team to the
match and part-take in the celebration. We appreciate you taking
time to nominate this season's recipients and for building a more
Christ-like atmosphere in our CYO gyms!
Welcome to CYO Wrestling!
CYO Wrestling is open to boys and girls in grades 3-8. Practices begin
in early November and regular season matches continue into February. The
program concludes with the exciting Diocesan Championships.
Only trained coaches who attend the Coaches Development Program are
permitted to coach in CYO Athletics. Every coach will facilitate a positive
environment in which athletes can grow physically, emotionally, socially and
spiritually. For a list of sessions and to register, please visit the
Coaches Development Program web page.
CYO’s philosophy states that every player participates at all divisions of
play. Each athlete must be treated with Dignity regardless of their ability.
Participation on a team allows players to learn and understand the values of
cooperation, teamwork, sportsmanship, responsibility, and respect. CYO
encourages each child to develop at their own pace while working for a
common goal by regulating mandatory participation rules. The participation
requirements are clearly defined in the rule book. It is our Hope that each
athlete can make a significant contribution to their team.
Genesis 1:27 reminds us “in the Divine image God created humanity.” CYO
Athletics encourages every athlete and every coach to accept one another
with compassion, respect, patience, kindness, humility and understanding.
Whether a wrestler is performing a takedown or just going for the pin, CYO
Wrestling always comes out on top!
