Justice for Immigrants: A Journey of Hope.

The Catholic Campaign for Immigration Reform

In 2000, the United States bishops issued a pastoral letter titled Strangers No Longer, Together on the Journey of Hope, which calls us to move beyond the anti-immigrant stance toward which many of our citizens are leaning and to promote laws and policies that respect the human dignity of all people.  As part of the Church's response, a divers group of Catholic organizations with national networks have decided to join the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops' Justice for Immigrants: A Journey of Hope campaign designed to unite and mobilize a growing network of Catholic institutions, individuals, and other persons of good faith in support of a broad legalization program and comprehensive immigration reform. Its goal will be to maximize the Church's influence on this issue, consistent with the immigration reform principles enunciated in the bishops' pastoral letter.

In the prepared materials from Justice for Immigrants (www.justiceforimmigrants.org), the parish kit includes “Ideas for Schools, Religious Education, and Youth Programs.”  Review these simple ideas and find connections in lessons you already have planned.  As our world and our country become more global, it is a powerful message for us to share with our students.  Our roots in this country are as immigr
ants ourselves, and as Catholics and Americans, we are called to be open to others.

Empty Bowls Project

Engage in support of issues around hunger and homelessness, host an Empty Bowls project.    This program has good information and ideas for a Lenten service project with a special appeal to artists. It is a creative way to raise funds for the homeless by having young people use their artistic talents. The web site also has some good links to national youth service day. The project could be an opportunity to work with local high schools, both Catholic and public. This is an excellent way to achieve the vision of   Renewing the Vision of Youth Ministry, by moving beyond our parishes and working with and in the larger community. It also could be a good way to add in our Catholic social teaching. Check it out.   Go to:  http://www.emptybowls.net/

Souper Bowl of Caring

Souper Bowl of Caring is a non-profit organization leading an effort to touch lives and teach youth to fight hunger and poverty in their local communities. The 2007 effort was led by over 14,000 organizations and generated over $8 million for charities across the country and world.  http://www.souperbowl.org/

Catechetical Resource

The Center for Ministry Development has developed a resource The Price is Right/The Price We Pay PDF (181 KB) for parish youth ministry leaders to use for Souper Bowl of Caring. Written by Jane Angha, this session goes through the "practical steps" for participating in Souper Bowl of Caring collection and uses a game show for teaching youth about hunger.

Ministry of Leadership Development

Volunteer Management - Best Practices

One of the many tasks that we all deal with is volunteer management.  There are a wide variety of details associated with this, including the recruitment, screening, training, supervising, evaluation, and occasional firing (ouch!) of adults who seek to serve the Church and young people.

A great deal of attention has been given to the need for screening and fingerprinting volunteers. While this is a good step, it is a small part of what needs to be done.

To that end, the state of Ohio has developed a set of best practices for those working with volunteers who serve young people. You can get your own copy of the work by going to the address below for the Best Practices document. It is a time saver and is a good lens to assess your current efforts and determine the strengths and weaknesses of your volunteer management efforts.

John Paul II: His Life and Papacy

In a way like no other pope in history, John Paul II touched the hearts of the youth of our world in profound and lasting ways. He served as a model of Christian goodness, charity, compassion, justice, and faithfulness to the Good News of Jesus Christ. He served the Church as Vicar of Christ with unprecedented humility and genuine affection for all people of goodwill. He held a very special place in his heart for the youth of the world. He had enormous trust and expectation that they would accept their responsibility to transform the world into a society shaped by the love of Christ. He believed in them.

Saint Mary’s Press is pleased to offer resources for your use with the young people in your life as you celebrate the life of this great man and mourn his passing.
