In 1981, Pope John Paul II wrote a letter to Christian families.  In it he developed a vision for the Christian family.

Vision:   The Christian Family is designed by God:

To be an intimate community of persons
To serve life physically by bringing children into the world and spiritually by handing on values and traditions as well as developing the potential of each family member at every age.
To participate in the development of society by becoming a community for social training, hospitality, and political involvement in order to transform the world.
To share in the life and mission of the Church by becoming a believing and evangelizing community, a community of prayer and a community at the service of humanity.
