What is Prepare/Enrich
It is a set of relationship inventories used in marriage preparation or enrichment:
The new
Customized Version  customizes the inventories to fit the life situation of  each couple.

Why are we replacing the CDEM with Prepare/Enrich?
The CDEM needed to be updated.  We discovered many of the desired updates were already available in Prepare/Enrich:

v
Multiple inventories for the varied types of couples
v
Internet administration and scoring
v
Easy to read and understand report
v
Helpful feedback materials & skills training for couples
v
The best premarital inventory available at this time (2007).

Who made this decision and how was it reached?
Bishop Lennon has mandated replacing the CDEM with Prepare/Enrich November 26, 2007.  This was preceded by:

v
April 2004 - Presbyteral Council asks the Dept for Marriage & Family Ministry to study the feasibility of updating the CDEM vs. replacing it.
v
2006 - Dept. for Marriage & Family Ministry recommends replacing the CDEM with the Prepare/Enrich set of inventories.   A pilot study was begun.   32 Clergy were trained to administer the Prepare/Enrich inventories.
v
August 2007 - Results of the pilot study were presented to Bishop Lennon and the Presbyteral Council.  24 of the 32 participants replied to the evaluation questionnaire with 19 (79%) recommending replacing the CDEM with Prepare/Enrich.  Couples who took the inventories were favorable or very favorable toward it.
v
October 2007 - Presbyteral Council deliberates and votes to accept the recommendation to replace the CDEM with Prepare/Enrich
v
November 2007 - Bishop Lennon mandates replacing the CDEM with Prepare/Enrich. CDEM is to be supported for two years or until clergy are all trained in new inventories.

What are the benefits of using Prepare/Enrich?
There are many benefits including:

v
Based on solid research and continuous development.
v
Comprehensive profile of couples including couple type, personality assessment, abuse and substance use assessment, idealistic distortion scale and couple & family map.
v
Flexibility for different types of couples (engaged, cohabiting, couples with children, older couples, married couples).
v
Ease of online administration and scoring.
v
Clear, easy to read report.
v
Workbook and couple exercises give useful feedback and teach communication / conflict resolution skills.
v
Materials for couple ministers to assist clergy with both marriage preparation and marriage enrichment.
v
Diocesan statistics will be kept.  Future research is possible.

Is training required?
Yes.  Because of the comprehensiveness of the inventories, a six hour training is required.   Trainees also receive a unique 7 digit ID number.

What is the cost of training?
In 2008, training was free (a $175 value!) to qualified clergy and pastoral ministers.  The cost was covered by the CDEM replacement fund.  In 2010 the cost for new trainees is $100 and updaters is $50 to attend a training.

Who should be trained?
Training is for all clergy and those pastoral ministers already involved or soon to be involved in marriage ministry.   Training is most effective if the inventories will be used within weeks of the training.    A separate, less comprehensive training will also be offered for couple ministers (see below).

When and where are the trainings?  go to Training Page
Trainings are held at sites around the diocese.   Trainings are posted on the Marriage & Family Website.

How do I register?
Email Ginny Deeks or call her at 216-334-1972.   Email is preferred as we will need your email address for setting up your administrator ID.    Also include your parish name and phone number.

Is there a registration deadline?
We would like an accurate count one week before each training session.    The goal is to train all current clergy by the end of 2009.

What if I already use FOCCUS or another premarital inventory?
You should still be trained in Prepare/Enrich.   It is the new standard mandated for the Cleveland Diocese.

How will I order scorings and what is the cost?
Order scorings using one of the two credit card options for $29.95 each.  We recommend having couples pay with their credit card as this invests them more in the process.   Administrators may also purchase by credit card.   MFO will no longer provide scorings as of November 2010.

Will all scorings be done online?
Yes.  This is most cost effective and efficient method.

What if I or my couples have limited computer knowledge?
No problem!  The internet interface is simple and easy.   Clergy and couples with little or no computer experience have quickly and successfully learned the online procedures.  In addition, the help of a skilled and trustworthy administrative assistant may be utilized to manage scorings at the parish.

What about training couple ministers?  go to training page
We encourage clergy to train couple ministers (healthy married couples) to assist them in marriage preparation.

v     Trainings are scheduled by the Dept for Marriage & Family Ministry.

v     It is suggested that established couple ministers be trained after their clergy are trained by taking the Enrich inventory and attending two 3 hour sessions on the full set of inventories.   (Cost $50 per couple).

v     New couple ministers should attend the full 5 week Couple Ministry Training that will include training in Prepare/Enrich, theology of marriage & family, religious practice of young adults, interfaith couples, cohabiting couples, introduction to NFP and spirituality of marriage.  (Cost: $125 per couple).

v     Materials are also available not only for marriage preparation but also for marriage enrichment and support for married couples.
