Camp is Hard Work!

"This is the hardest job you will ever love!" a former camp counselor explained to a potential new counselor.

We are pleased that you are interested in employment with the Catholic Charities Summer Camping Programs.  Before you complete the employment application, we want to preview what you can expect as a Camp Counselor.

We find that many applicants do not fully understand what a camp counselor does.  A position as a camp counselor can be very rewarding if you like working with children.  However, being a camp counselor is also hard work!  Working with the children, being outside, planning activities, and cleaning up is challenging. Working with children with disabilities can also be challenging.  This job is not for everyone.  Please consider working for Catholic Charities Programs carefully.

WE REQUIRE AN INTEREST IN WORKING WITH CHILDREN
We expect all children, young adults, and their families to be treated with dignity, respect and a friendly attitude at all times, under any circumstances. We also expect camp counselors to be: alert, adaptable, accountable, honest, confident, willing to sacrifice, caring, fun, approachable, creative, professional, a good communicator, a role model, and a hard worker. These are not optional responsibilities. Children and their parents will be the first to say something if these do not happen.

CAMP IS FOR THE CAMPER

Being a counselor is much more than playing with children all day. Camp counseling involves planning a weekly schedule, a weekly staff meeting, working with other staff members and daily clean up. It also involves working with the children, being a positive role model for them, swimming and playing with them, and taking time to get to know each child.  This job requires you to be outside and alert to all camper needs, all the time.  For Camp Happiness, the staff ratio is 1 staff for every 4 campers as appropriate.
