Diocesan Social Action Office

Diocesan Social Action Office The Diocesan Social Action Office (DSAO) was formed in 1989 to serve as the administrative/management arm of the five Catholic Commissions of the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland. The DSAO ensures that actions taken are consistent with the priorities of the Bishop of Cleveland, Catholic Charities, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Catholic Conference of Ohio and Catholic Charities USA.

The DSAO is involved in public policy at all levels, community development and education and training. In addition, the DSAO oversees the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, Catholic Relief Services and the Rural Life Office of the Diocese of Cleveland.

Purpose: As the social action arm of the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland, the Commission is involved with public policy issues at all levels of government, community development and education and training, promoting and defending the dignity of human life across the continuum of life spectrum and providing social justice education to parishes, schools and other faith-based groups. Also partners with labor, civic entities and community groups to promote justice, peace and empowerment of the poor and vulnerable, consistent with Catholic Social Teaching.

Population Served:Provides advocacy and empowerment on behalf of and along with low-income individuals and families and other vulnerable populations.

Criteria: Cuyahoga County parishioners may serve on the Commission and/or committees and task forces.

Fees:Minimal fee for the Sowers of Justice Training Program.

Major Funders: Catholic Charities Annual Appeal; donations; grants.

Purpose: To promote and implement the work of the Catholic Campaign for Human Development and Catholic Relief Services.

Population Served:Serves the parishes throughout the diocese and non-profit organizations engaged in economic development, organizing and empowerment, and Catholic schools seeking global solidarity and partnerships.

Criteria: Interested individuals may serve on the board or council.

Fees:There is no fee for this ministry.

Major Funders: National Office of Catholic Campaign for Human Development or Catholic Relief Services.

Purpose: To promote the Church’s teaching on global solidarity in order to strengthen the Gospel call to international peace and justice. The intention is to mobilize people of the Diocese of Cleveland to actions that result in change for our brothers and sisters in other countries.
Population Served:Youth and adults in the Cleveland Diocesan parishes and high schools are educated and challenged to advocate for the common good of all people.

Criteria: Individuals who are passionately interested in advancing the Church’s teaching on global solidarity.

Fees:There are no fee for this program.

Major Funders: Catholic Relief Services, donations, grants.
